Anywhere / Everywhere = Somewhere

Anywhere/ Everywhere = Somewhere is a project that assumes the most sustainable building is one already built. The existing condition is characterised by repetitive, atomised homes arranged in rows, made to maximise units with little consideration of landscape- creating a lack of humanity, diversity, and amenity.

Communality allows for greater amenity provision than would be possible in an atomised arrangement. The repetitive terrace is disrupted through the introduction of a greater range of dwelling types, workspace, and rooftop gardens, which may be adapted in configuration to suit the community’s needs. The project presents a six-part analysis and six responsive treatments, a toolkit for adaption in multiple regional settings.

The project assumes the most sustainable building is one already built. These buildings carry not only embodied carbon, but embodied collective memory. Reinterpreting essential characteristics of the typology allows for change without the loss of familiarity. It is beneficial for existing communities to retain, modify, and deep energy retrofit these buildings so as to address the challenges of the changing climate communally.
